A sense that there is more to life than the part you’ve been taught to see.
Perhaps you’ve followed that feeling into books, workshops, and practices of your own.
Perhaps you’ve never known what to call it— much less where to look.
And yet. Something still feels missing.
You can be busy all week. Do everything that needs doing. Then wonder where those days went.
Have you ever felt like a spectator of your own life?
Or heard someone speak about something that makes them come alive— and wished you could find what stirs you that deeply?
You may have people you love. Work you care about. Experiences that have meant something to you.
And still feel that hunger.
How do you explain what’s missing when you cannot quite name it yourself?
Perhaps you’ve tried— and the conversation moved on before you could make yourself understood.
You want to experience something for yourself— something that reaches beyond another idea, another explanation of what life might mean.
But where do you begin?
Whether you are just beginning to ask or have searched for years, that question deserves more than another passing answer.
Before I tell you what you can undertake here, let me show you the story behind this temple— and why it may matter to the search that brought you to its door.
My name is Leslie McQuade. I’m Chief Adept of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. I’m also an anthropologist and archaeologist.
What draws me to these ancient traditions is a question that reaches into our lives today:
What might we discover about ourselves if we learned to experience more than we ordinarily notice?
01 / The Hermetic inheritance
Our story began in Sumer.
Star scribes gazed into the heavens from the ziggurats, tracking patterns that echoed on earth.
In Babylon, they followed the celestial cycles, deepening their knowledge of the rhythms of the stars.
Their questions reached beyond the movements of the stars.
What was humanity’s place within this vast order? What connected the life within us to the life unfolding around us?
Egypt gave sacred knowledge expression in the rites. Greece brought philosophy and method.
These streams converged in Alexandria.
Here, the Hermetic tradition took its name from Hermes Trismegistus— and brought humanity and the cosmos within a single spiritual vision.
The aim was to accelerate human spiritual evolution— to awaken and develop what ordinarily remains hidden within us.
That sense that there might be more to life— and more within you— had become the subject of a spiritual discipline.
Teachings to study. Practices to undertake. A path of development to follow.
People devoted their lives to this work— and taught others to continue it.
The fire at Alexandria
Then the library burned.
Flames climbed the shelves. Smoke filled the halls.
The accumulated teachings were disappearing into the fire.
Through the smoke, an Adept named Serapis gathered what he could carry.
His arms overflowing with sacred scrolls, he made his way through the burning library toward the light of the doorway.
What he carried had to survive.
Within those teachings lay work that others might still undertake.
People who had yet to discover it. People who might one day ask what more they could experience— and what they might become.
Across centuries, this lineage was transmitted to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, founded in 1888.
02 / The search
Still on the outside, looking in.
Have you ever felt that there must be more— found something that spoke directly to that feeling— and thought, “This is what I’ve been looking for”?
The experience was meaningful. But once the excitement faded, did you feel something was missing again?
So you read another book. Or attended that next workshop. Or tried a spell that someone recommended.
You gave it your time because you hoped it would still that ancient hunger.
But did it fill that void— or soon leave you searching again?
And the worst part? It could leave you asking: “That was it? Where’s the path?”
Another fragment.
It could even leave you feeling worse afterward— because you let yourself believe again.
And even when you finally find something real— how do you know you’re doing it right?
You prepare the ritual. Trace the forms. Speak the words exactly as written. Pour everything into the working.
But did you do it right?
Without feedback, how would you know?
A mistake can slip past you unnoticed. You repeat it tomorrow. And the next day.
Until the mistake feels natural.
The words become familiar. The movements become easier.
But are you developing skill— or becoming more confident in an error no one has caught?
You change something, hoping for a better result.
But was that even the problem?
You adjust. Try again. Still wonder.
First you question the method. Then your own perception. Then the results you thought you were getting.
Even when something powerful happens, the doubt follows you.
Was that real? Did I imagine it? Can I do it again?
Are you developing real ability— or just getting better at fooling yourself?
Another month of practice. Another year.
You’ve given the work so much.
But are you actually progressing?
Who knows your practice well enough to help you see where you’re struggling—or how far you’ve come?
And when you’re excited about what happened in a ritual, there’s no one to share it with who understands—or cares.
So you keep it to yourself.
You’ve read about Magicians working together. About standing in a Temple among fellow initiates.
But when it’s time for your own ritual, you’re alone again.
Alone with the work. Alone with the doubts. Alone with the experiences you long to share.
You know the symbols. You practice the rituals.
And still you’re on the outside, looking in.
03 / The path
Why Hermetic Ritual Is Initiation
That’s exactly why the Hermetic Adepts passed down their practices within a living initiatic tradition.
Because they understood something easily missed when you study rituals on your own:
Spiritual transformation unfolds through practice… sustained, day after day.
That practice passes from Adept to initiate. Each generation carries the work forward.
Not simply learning a ceremony. But entering a practice that changes you.
Through elemental ritual, you work to influence physical circumstances— the practical matters of your everyday life.
Through planetary ritual, you work with what drives you— your need for security, your courage, your desire for connection.
Through zodiacal ritual, you develop how you meet life— how you take initiative, make decisions, and respond to change.
Through Sephirothic ritual, you seek direct experience of the divine.
Each kind of work has its purpose. Together, these practices awaken and strengthen forces within you… as you return to the work, day after day…
You are both the practitioner and the substance being transformed— in a process the Hermetic tradition describes as turning lead into gold.
And that greater purpose can disappear when rituals become isolated exercises.
You may know the words. You may understand the symbolism.
Yet still wonder how it all fits together— and where your practice is taking you.
An initiatic path connects those workings into a continuing process of transformation.
You invoke the forces. You undertake the exercises.
And through that work, you develop the person performing them: yourself.
Through something you do.
Your Hermetic practice is daily initiation.
Your workings begin to form a whole. You know what you are practicing—and why.
You understand what each ritual helps you develop, with Adept guidance when you need help understanding an instruction, making sense of an experience, or working through a difficulty.
And among fellow initiates, you can share your discoveries with people who understand why they matter.
Through sustained Hermetic Ritual, you take an active part in the spiritual development you have been seeking.
That is the purpose of this initiatic path: to accelerate your spiritual evolution.
Toward divinization— awakening and developing the divine within you.
And, ultimately, conscious immortality— developing the spiritual body through which consciousness can remain awake beyond physical death. An immense undertaking, begun through daily work.
Now let me show you how you can begin walking that path.
The company you are entering
An extraordinary tradition. A remarkable order.
Since 1888, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn has drawn people whose imagination reached beyond the world as it appeared.
Poets. Artists. Visionaries. People who wanted to enter the mysteries for themselves.
By entering the Golden Dawn, you step onto the same path once walked by influential figures in history—and undertake the Hermetic rites within the tradition that gave them their place.
W. B. YeatsPoet & Nobel laureateBram StokerAuthor of DraculaFlorence FarrActress & Golden Dawn leaderMoina MathersArtist, visionary & Alpha Ωmega leaderA. E. WaiteCo-creator of the Rider–Waite TarotPamela Colman SmithArtist of the Rider–Waite Tarot
W. B. Yeats found a place here. So did A. E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith, whose Tarot images remain familiar to people who have never heard the Order’s name.
And women entered on equal terms with men. Florence Farr led its London temple. Moina Mathers helped give its mysteries visual form, brought her visionary gifts to its inner work, and went on to lead the Alpha Ωmega.
These were people who stepped inside. They undertook the work, helped shape its expression, and carried it forward.
Their steps are not relics. The rites are still practiced. The teachings are still transmitted. The invitation to enter still lies before you.
For generations, the Golden Dawn has stood as a threshold—between encountering the mysteries from outside and beginning to know them from within.
04 / Your annual subscription
Begin Your Work Within the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
Your annual subscription brings you into the Order.
You have a path to follow and guidance as you put it into practice.
You enter a living initiatic tradition.
You can begin without years of prior study.
Perhaps you’re just discovering what drew you here. Perhaps you’ve searched and practiced for years—
and want to bring that search into work you can undertake each day.
Your training begins in the Neophyte grade.
The curriculum gives your work a sequence— a foundation on which to build.
Ritual Magick. Qabalah. Astrology. Tarot.
Subjects you may have encountered separately now have a place within your training.
You study the principles. Undertake the practices. Explore their meaning through your own experience.
Your search becomes work you can return to each day— directed toward the spiritual development that drew you to these mysteries.
Your assigned Adept mentor helps you apply the instruction to your own practice.
You begin magical work from day one, from where you live—
guided by someone who has undertaken the disciplines you are beginning yourself.
As you continue, you have someone to turn to with the questions your own practice raises.
Each month, you submit your ritual journal.
What you practiced. What you experienced. Where you became uncertain.
Your mentor reviews those observations to give you specific feedback on your own practice.
You can ask about the instruction you weren’t sure you understood, the difficulty that keeps returning, or the experience you cannot explain and need help making sense of.
How to pronounce a Divine Name. How to use a ritual tool. Why a practice calls for a particular step.
Questions about how to perform the work— and questions about its purpose.
Then take that guidance back into your next working.
As you continue, you build more than a collection of ritual instructions.
What you once struggled to understand on the page becomes something you have practiced— and can discuss from experience.
You can get feedback on the point where you became uncertain, the adjustment you tried, and what happened when you put it into practice.
Your questions become more specific because you have your own work to examine.
And the guidance you receive comes back with you into practice— where you can explore what you didn’t understand when you first read the instruction.
A difficulty may take more than one conversation. More than one working.
But you can return to it with your mentor, drawing on what you have done and experienced.
What began as words on a page becomes work you know from within— with growing understanding of what you are doing, and why.
And you have fellow initiates with whom to share what you discover.
When a ritual leaves you excited, you have people to tell.
When you struggle, you can hear the questions and experiences others bring to the same work.
People who understand why it matters— because they are undertaking these disciplines too.
You can begin with the experience itself.
The question you have been turning over. The difficulty you hesitated to mention. The discovery you wanted someone to understand.
There is room for that conversation here.
And you have something to bring to it: your own questions, your own experience, your own participation in the work.
The path becomes part of your life— and you become part of the Order.
How Membership Works
Twice each month, join us live on Google Meet for teaching, questions, and discussion.
You can meet fellow initiates, hear the questions they bring, and share what your own practice is opening up.
Between gatherings, your Neophyte curriculum gives you 145 written lessons to work through.
A new lesson opens every three to four days, with an email linking you directly to it— so you know what to work on next.
You can return to the written instructions as you study and practice.
Something that seemed clear when you read it may raise a question when you try it.
Bring that question to the live gathering— with your own experience of where you became uncertain.
And you can participate from where you live.
English–Spanish instant translation brings English- and Spanish-speaking members into the same live conversation.
Distance from a temple need not stop your training or progression.
You can complete the entire Outer Order remotely.
For each grade, you complete the magical work and take an examination with your tutor.
Your tutor verifies your practice and understanding of the theoretical material.
You are then virtually advanced to the next grade.
Physical temple initiation is available from the Neophyte grade onward, if you choose it.
Entry into the Inner Order requires the preceding physical temple initiations.
Your subscription is annual, billed yearly.
Throughout that year, you have lessons to continue, a mentor to consult, and fellow initiates to meet as your practice develops.
Between live gatherings, your mentor’s Telegram group connects you with your Adept mentor and fellow students.
A question needn’t remain something you turn over alone until the next webinar.
With monthly ritual journal review, you can receive feedback informed by the work you recorded before.
An earlier difficulty can be examined alongside what happened when you put the guidance into practice.
You can then discuss how to approach what remains difficult— and what to give particular attention to in your next ritual.
Lessons to follow. Guidance as you practice. People with whom to share the path.
You perform the exercises and rituals. Record what you did and experienced. Bring your questions to your mentor. Then take that guidance back into your next working.
What happens next can become the beginning of your next conversation.
Your mentor can follow a difficulty with you beyond the first answer.
Your fellow initiates give you people with whom to share what the work is opening up.
And the curriculum places today’s practice within a sequence that continues beyond it.
You can sit down to your daily work knowing where it belongs, who you can turn to, and how you can continue.
The Order becomes more than something you have read about or hoped to enter.
You are undertaking its disciplines. Working through your questions with your mentor. Taking part in its fellowship.

06 / From our members
What they found within the Order.
Here is how five members describe their experience.
“I was initially skeptical about the Golden Dawn and magic because there is so much sanctimonious, fluffy bunny stuff in the esoteric world. The effect of the Golden Dawn Neophyte initiation followed by the spiritual practices put my doubts to rest forever.”
Suso L. · Barcelona, Spain
“I have seen profound, positive transformation, not only in myself, but also in my relationships and in others on the same Path. I have gained self-mastery, knowledge, and peace within. I have been able to let go of past issues, fine tune my innate talents, and awaken latent ones.”
Anabela P. · Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
“I have always had reservations about any tradition promising things far beyond one's own reality, but any doubts I had were totally blown away by Golden Dawn initiation and practice. This is the real thing!”
Neal S. · Flagstaff, Arizona, USA
“The Golden Dawn has shown me that I am Master of my own Destiny rather than merely the product of my social conditioning.”
Jacques N. · Paris, France
“I wholeheartedly recommend HOGD, which stands unsurpassed for its academic standards, support system and the integrity of actual physical initiations, preserving the age-old initiatic stream that I always dreamed existed.”
Derek D. · Durban, South Africa
07 / Before you enter
Your questions belong here, too.
“Will I finally share real ritual experience with others?”
At a physical temple, you can practice Magick together with fellow initiates. Physical temple initiation is available from day one. You do not have to reach an advanced grade before pursuing that experience.
If you live far from a temple, you can still come to know the people sharing your path. Geography and language have long limited who could gather in a mystery school. Our twice-monthly Google Meet gatherings let you meet fellow initiates across borders, with instant translation between English and Spanish. You can join the conversation with our Latin American brothers and sisters and build friendships without living near a temple.
Between gatherings, your mentor’s Telegram group connects you with their other students. You have people with whom to share discoveries and discuss the questions your practice raises.
You can begin building those relationships online, even before you have the opportunity to meet fellow initiates in a physical temple.
Virtual initiation allows you to begin from where you live and continue through the Outer Order grades.
Advancement into the Inner Order requires all preceding physical initiations. You can complete the Outer Order remotely, with that requirement clear from the beginning.
“Is this real Magick—or just more cosplay?”
Your skepticism is understandable. You can be drawn to the ceremony and still want to know what stands behind it. Beautiful robes and impressive symbolism leave that question unanswered on their own.
You undertake the exercises, keep a record of your practice, and bring your observations and questions to your mentor. You have your own experience to examine—and you can question what you find.
The Golden Dawn’s grade structure dates to its founding in 1888. You enter a course of study, practice, and initiation, guided by an Adept who has worked through the disciplines you are beginning.
You can take the work seriously without surrendering your judgment.
“When does the actual magical practice begin?”
From day one. You begin magical practice within a structured curriculum in the Neophyte grade. You do not have to wait until the Inner Order to start practicing Magick.
Your quick-start guide gives you a place to begin your Ritual Magic practice while your Neophyte lessons unfold.
“How will I know whether I’m doing the work correctly?”
You have somewhere to take that question. In your mentor’s Telegram group, describe the exercise you are working on, what you did, what you experienced, and where you became uncertain.
Your monthly ritual journal review gives your mentor a continuing record of your practice. The discussion can begin with the work you actually undertook and the questions it raised. You return to the exercise with guidance and continue recording your experience.
You can also bring questions into the twice-monthly live webinars. Another initiate may ask about something you had noticed but could not yet put into words. As you continue, you are developing both your practice and your ability to examine it.
“Can I sustain this alongside my work and family?”
Set aside at least 20 minutes a day for your magical practice, plus time for study.
The path is self-paced. A new written lesson opens every three to four days, but you can take as long as you need to work through the material and progress through the grades.
You can build a steady practice alongside work and family, with guidance from your mentor as you go.
“I’ve already studied. What would joining add?”
You bring that preparation with you. What you have read gives you questions to explore through practice—and an Adept with whom to discuss what you discover.
You follow the Order’s grade progression alongside fellow initiates. The teachings you have encountered separately become subjects you study and practice within one continuing path.
The annual subscription includes your training, mentor contact, monthly journal review, twice-monthly webinars, community access, and Ancient Rites collection. During this flash sale, it is $149/year, billed yearly, instead of the regular $299/year. You are subscribing to continuing membership in the Order.
